If you have a 56K modem. Click the "CSG 50 speedtest" link. After a few seconds, a page will load, showing a "thermometer", above which is a box with two numbers. The first is the speed in "kilobits per second"; the second is the speed in "kilobytes per second". The second speed is about one-eight of the first. Typical speed for a 56K modem would be around 53 Kbps. For the sake of comparison, a cable modem would give you around 1500 Kbps (about 30 times faster)

If you click on the "MSN speedtest" link, you'll be asked to enter your telephone area code, and also to select the type of internet connection you have. Then you click "Test it", and a few seconds later, you'll get the results page, showing a graph with your connection speed as a red bar, and it'll be compared to a bunch of other connection types.
